Incredibly complex and cool nose, this is extremely fresh without the yeastiness that often accompanies this. Reine claude plum and crisp pear aromas, but also intense notes of herb garden after rain and ferns. Stunningly energetic and racy with such a pure and expressive finish.

From gravelly-sandy quartzite soils in a gentle, southeast to southwest-facing site at 200 meters in altitude, the Hallgartener VDP.Grosse Lage 2022 Jungfer Riesling trocken GG opens with a deep, pure, clear and intense, very elegant and characteristic nose of ripe fruits and saline notes. Round and mouth-filling on the palate, this is a full-bodied and intense yet also lean, fine and very mineral structured and finishing Riesling with a long and complex aftertaste. 13% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Tasted in July 2024.

The 2022 Riesling Hallgartener Jungfer Grosses Gewächs is from a southeast-facing site on quartzite with sand and gravel, where the oldest parcels are just over 50 years old and the youngest, 10. This was made partly in wood and partly in stainless steel. The subtly-scented nose is full of creamy apple, dried apple peel and lifted, dried citrus peel. The palate is zesty, fine, creamy, juicy and precise, all at once, like, ripe, mellow apple flesh bathed in citrus. It’s a totally charming and disarming wine, not loud, but beautifully pervasive.

Nachdem er lange in Vergessenheit geraten war, ist der ‚Schwarze Herrgott‘ heute eine der besten Cool-Climate-Lagen der Pfalz. Philipp Kuhn zählt mit 5 Sternen bei Eichelmann und Falstaff sowie 5 Feinschmecker-„F“ zur Weltspitze, dazu kommen 4 rote Trauben bei Gault&Millau und 4 Sterne bei Vinum.

The 2024 Riesling Zeller Schwarzer Herrgott Grosses Gewächs is from the cool valley on Tertiary limestone. Crushed citrus foliage, bright lemon zest and flintiness unite on the nose, providing an immediate frisson of pleasure. A touch of Mirabelle plum lends more juiciness on the taut, slender body. This just stretches ahead into the coolest, most refreshingly citric length. (Bone-dry)

This very smoky, highly structured and compact wine is only medium-bodied but feels bigger than it really is due to its boldness and firmness. Fresh and candied citrus flavors are wrapped around a firm core that extends through the long, cool finish. Needs some time. Drink or hold.
