Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Beau-Sejour Becot (80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon) is just a little closed to begin, opening out to reveal beautiful chocolate-covered cherries, preserved plums and black raspberries scents with touches of stewed tea, tobacco, red roses and cinnamon stick. Full-bodied and jam-packed with perfumed fruit layers, it has a rock-solid frame of ripe, finely grained tannins and layer upon layer of provocative black fruit and savory layers on the finish.

Extremely aromatic and lifted on the nose with wild fruit and flowers, as well as chalk and mushroom undertones. Full body and ultra-fine tannins with beautiful grace and balance. Shows structure yet refinement at the same time. Needs four to five years to come completely together, but already so beautiful. Drink after 2023.

Barrel Sample. Minty aromas signal the effect new wood is already having on this wine. The fruit is opulent and ripe, with generous blackberry and plum flavors filling the glass. It will take many years to develop, so drink after 2029.

A special 3,200-bottle release culled from a selection of Sangiovese from their Pian Bossolino and Poggio al Sole plots, the La Fiorita 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Fiore di No is a very convincing wine that offers much more depth and complexity than the estate's classic Brunello. The wine opens to dark fruit, spice and camphor ash and then shows a very complete, wide-brush-stroke approach to the grape. You get the dark primary fruit, the depth and the length on the mouthfeel.

The cherry, black-olive and dried-strawberry aromas are so attractive. Hints of cinnamon and licorice. Full-bodied, round and rich with lots of fruit and velvety tannins. Extremely flavorful and rich. Drink after 2022.

Deep red. Captivating aromas of red cherry, strawberry, sweet pipe tobacco, and flint. Impressively built, multifaceted and layered, this boasts very pure and round flavors similar to the aromas. The finish is long and dense, and features polished tannins and a suave texture. Knockout Brunello, probably the best I have had from La Fiorita in a very long time, and likely ever. Noticeably less floral than the 2015 classico Brunello from this estate but more complex and much deeper. Made with grapes taken from the best part of the Pian Bossolino and Poggio al Sole vineyards. The NO on the label stands for Natalie Oliveros, the estate owner; a real knockout, this wine is only made in the best vintages.

Moving to the reds, the 2021 Pinot Noir was raised in 45% new barrels and reveals a translucent ruby hue as well as a gorgeous bouquet of spiced red and black raspberry fruits, leafy herbs, forest floor, and baking spices. Medium-bodied on the palate, it's not the most massive or richest in the vintage, yet its balance is spot on, it has beautifully integrated tannins, and lively acidity. It's a stunning Pinot Noir with so much character. Drink bottles over the coming 7-8 years.

The 2021 Pinot Noir Estate Bien Nacido Vineyard offers up scents of rose petal, mint, cedar, blood orange, pipe tobacco and dried herbs. Aromatic and yet poised, with tons of understated depth, the 2021 is super-impressive. Bright acids propel the finish effortlessly. What a gorgeous wine this is.

The 2021 McDonald Vyd. Marananga Shiraz is a step up in savory tannin and earth/grit from the Maranaga Shiraz tasted prior. This has a very good, authentic feeling to the tannins, a lot of the swirling around and sticking to teeth etc. This is classy, and like al the other wines in this collection, it is huge. But it wears it well. 1,200 bottles filled. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

This sub-regional tier flows more easily than the single vineyard cuvees which, frankly, I found too heavy with oak. While there is ample oak sensation here, too, the structural lattice is less reliant on it. The tannins are pliant, nicely chewy and savory. Some cedar aromas, sure, but blueberry, fennel, freshly tilled earth, dried kelp, clove and violet florals abound. The finish, long and effortless, rather than stolid and drying. There is a welcome elegance to this despite the power. Very good drinking.

The violets and blackberries show wonderfully on the nose here, yet this remains subtle and complete with hints of walnuts. Full body, ultra-fine and firm tannins and a beautiful fruit and mineral undertone. Tight and substantial. So layered. Another example of finesse and beauty here with this pure merlot. Better in 2018.

The 2023 Galatrona,100% Merlot, is soft, plush and sensual. Dark blue/purplish fruit, cloves, new leather, menthol and licorice all meld together in the glass. Soft, caressing contours shape this mid-weight, understated vintage of the estate's flagship wine. The 2023 is not a huge Galatrona but is instead a wine that impresses with its finesse. This is a step up from the 2022.
