Sie stehen auf der Liste aller Cabernet Sauvignon-Aficionados ganz weit oben: die raren Single-Vineyard-Cabs aus Kalifornien. Diese kultigen Weine stehen im Rang und auch im Preis den Grands Crus Classés aus Bordeaux in nichts nach. Und meistens - auch hier findet man eine Analogie zu den französischen Pendants - steckt ein herausragender Önologe hinter dem Erfolg. Im Falle der Anakota Winery ist das kein Geringerer als der legendäre Pierre Seillan, der vor allem als Schöpfer der sagenhaft hoch bewerteten Vérité-Weine weltberühmt geworden ist, die mehrfach die 100 Parker-Punkte knackten und gerne mal über 1.000 Euro pro Flasche kosten. Doch dieser Pierre Seillan zeichnet auch für die Cabernet Sauvignon der Anakota Winery verantwortlich und im Falle des 'Helena Montana Vineyard' 2018 spielt dieser Wein mit 97+ Parker-Punkten durchaus in einer Liga mit den Vérité-Weinen, ist jedoch ist um ein Vielfaches preiswürdiger.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Helena Montana Vineyard hails from a single vineyard in Knights Valley located at 950 feet in elevation. It has a brilliant nose of savory red and black currants, dried herbs, saddle leather, and tobacco, with a decidedly Bordeaux-like vibe in both its aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied and nicely concentrated, with ripe tannins on the palate, this is a serious, captivating, incredibly impressive Cabernet that will shine for at least two decades. You could put this beauty in a lineup of First Growth Bordeaux and it would do just fine.

Gäbe es in Mendoza eine offizielle Klassifikation wie in Frankreich, dann stünde dieser Ausnahme-Wein ganz weit oben, Zuccardis 'Supercal' wäre definitiv ein argentinischer Grand Cru der absoluten Spitzenklasse: ""Einer der besten Weine, die wir in Argentinien verkostet haben"", schwärmt der Guía Descorchados über die 2018er-Edition. Und das will was heißen, schließlich gilt der Descorchados unangefochten als Weinbibel für ganz Südamerika. Genialer Kopf hinter dem Traum-Gewächs 'Supercal' ist der talentierte und rastlose Eigner Sebastián Zuccardi. Seine akribische Suche nach besonderen Terroirs, die Argentiniens Star-Rebe in immer wieder neuen Facetten zeigen, führte ihn dann im legendären Valle de Uco auf 1.100 Meter Anden-Höhe. Hier fand er eine kleine Parzelle mit stark kalkhaltigen Böden - dadurch wirken die Weine nahezu kreidig und betören am Gaumen mit viel Grip. So wie eben sein 'Supercal', ein kühler, eleganter und purer Malbec, dessen 2018er-Edition für ihre Raffinesse mit Bestnoten überschüttet wird, angeführt von sensationellen 98 Parker-Punkten und schier unglaublichen 99 Descorchados-Punkten. Eine meisterhafte Rarität, von der es weltweit nur 1.000 Flaschen gibt!

Supercal is a selection of small sectors of the Piedra Infinita Vineyard, the 52 hectares planted around the Zuccardi winery, about 1,100 meters above sea level in Altamira, in the south of the Uco Valley. It's mainly a selection of soils rich in gravel and limestone that the winery team selects and harvests manually and then ferments in whole clusters in concrete tanks. Winemaker Sebastián Zuccardi takes care to crush the bunches to prevent carbonic maceration, which he believes produces aromas more related to the winery than to the place. Fermentation with the stems adds tannins to the wine, but it is surely the calcareous soil that gives personality to the texture of this Supercal, an austere malbec with intense acidity and sharp tannins that simulate the sensation of chalk. It's generous in refreshing, juicy flavors—pure cherries wrapped in herbal and floral tones. One of the best wines we have tasted in Argentina.

There is a strong iron note in the 2018 Finca Piedra Infinita Supercal, a Malbec from a small plot within Piedra Infinita, usually the first plot to be harvested within Piedra Infinita. It's an extreme plot, very shallow and with pure stone and a strong character. They found this plot in search for cal," pure limestone, so they want a strong sensation of chalk in the wine here. Patrick Valette's style of winemaking I admire enormously and he has the most delicate touch which reflects in all the wines he makes, schreibt die berühmte britische Wein-Journalistin Jancis Robinson über den Weinmacher des 2016er 'VIK'. Und soviel Lob kommt nicht von ungefähr, denn der frühere Doyen des Château Pavie hat sich in den letzten Jahrzehnten einen Status als Önologe erarbeitet, den vielleicht außer ihm, nur noch Michel Rolland inne hat. Kein Wunder also, dass sein Wein vom Start weg für Furor sorgte und immer extrem schnell ausverkauft ist. Nun ist es uns gelungen, eine Mini-Allokation des 2016er-Jahrgangs dieses chilenischen Kultweins zu ergattern, der selbstbewusst den Anspruch eines südamerikanischen 'Premier Grand Cru' erhebt. Und das völlig zu Recht, wie die 99 Punkte von James Suckling zeigen.

One of the most charming and gentle expressions of Martinborough Pinot Noir you'll find, with its depth of fruit akin to holding a heavy ball in the palm of your hand, such is its midpalate weight. There's an abundance of tannins, but they are as resolved as tannins get, lightly coating the palate. The fruit was picked a little earlier than usual due to the warmth of the season in a bid to preserve tension and also keep the alcohol level at a very reasonable 13%. The acidity provides freshness and precision, giving the wine length and shape. While primary fruit is not front and center, on the finish it blossoms, offering cherries, cinnamon and clove spice. The 2019 Vintage Port is a field blend from old vines (80 to 100 years old) aged for 21 months in large Portuguese oak vats. It comes in with 88 grams per liter of residual sugar and 19.3% alcohol. This was seen about three months after bottling. In its own notes, the winery says it emphasized balance and elegance, and that is certainly a fitting summary of this wine. Let's not forget, though, the appealing aromatics laced with some eucalyptus and the grip on the finish. Plus, the texture is sensual and caressing on the palate. Then, the fruit adds waves of flavor. This finishes with some power and pop, making it a good candidate for the cellar. The tannins are not too hard, though, and they are nicely controlled. Its freshness will also serve it in good stead as it ages. - Mark Squires
